The Edward Ubosi’s Grassroots Boxing Talent Hunt Tournament has rounded off in Enugu on a spectacular note with participants winning laurels and various cash sums.
The eponymous tournament held at the indoor hall of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, was sponsored by the speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Edward Ubosi, to give youths in the state an opportunity to excel in fields other than football and basketball which already enjoy a prime place.
Participants were drawn from public secondary schools across the 17 local government areas of the state after an intensive process that began 11 months ago, he said.
“Your Excellency, each of the about 90 young boxers assembled here today as participants of the tournament will go home with consolidated and reasonable prizes for both winners and participants ranging from gold, silver, bronze medals, trophies and cash,” the speaker explained.
He noted that the gesture was in line with the Enugu State governor’s commitment to sports development and thanked guests for the massive turnout at the event.
Commending the speaker for the initiative, Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi said his administration will continue to support the growth of sports and other programmes capable of promoting youth development.
“What we have witnessed today is a welcome development and an addition to the milestone achievements recorded by our darling Rangers International Football Club of Enugu during the 2015/2016 Nigerian Professional League season tournament,” the governor noted.
He explained that each of the outlined sports programmes in the state was consistent with his administration’s vision towards diversifying sports activities in Enugu State to enable it win laurels during local, national and international sports competitions.
“Enugu State has therefore laid a solid foundation that will help her produce the next boxing champions for our great nation in particular and the world in general,” the governor stated, and congratulated the winners and entire participants for their display of sportsmanship.
Also speaking, the organizing committee’s chairman, Mr. Nelson Uduji, noted that it’s instructive sports has flourished during Gov. Ugwuanyi’s administration, adding that his presence at the occasion underscores this.
“What we are doing here today is further demonstration that the executive and the legislative arm of government in the state are working together. What we are trying to do is to give you support for what you are doing in the sports sector,” Uduji added.
The opening bout in the championship whose corporate sponsors include Nigerian Breweries Ltd, Universal Insurance and the 17 local government areas was between Ogbu Ebuka (Enugu East) and Emmanuel Chidiebere (Awgu).
