The Enugu State government has promised to assist traders affected in the fire incident that occurred recently at the milling section of the Ogbete Main Market, Enugu, resulting in the loss of grains and machines valued at N100m.
The state’s commissioner for commerce and industry, Barrister Sam Ogbu Nwobodo, gave the assurance when he paid an on-the-spot visit to the affected section of the market to commiserate with the traders.
Noting that the government will take urgent steps to cushion the effect of the disaster on the traders, he urged them to support whatever effort the state government puts in place to prevent a reoccurrence. “Most times fire incidents are as a result of carelessness. So I advise traders to be careful,” he said.
Chairman of Corn Millers Association, Mr Augustine Ogbonna, described the fire outbreak as a mystery. “This is something we have not experienced before. Over 200 bags of bambara nuts worth over N42,000 each were completely destroyed in the fire. All our milling machines were also burnt,” he said, lamenting that the huge loss has severely impacted the traders psychologically.
“This is why we solicit the urgent help of the government and other public-spirited individuals. There is no electricity in this section of the market so we don’t know how the fire started,” he added.
